All that Glitters

All That Glitters… is an in-progress series that reworks vintage holiday photographs to examine the decorative performance of femininity. In these images, women are not only arranging and maintaining the scene, but they are also expected to become part of it, styled, positioned, and presented as objects of visual pleasure.

Femininity is constructed as something to be seen, polished, and pleasing, while the labor behind it is minimized or ignored. That dynamic has changed little over the years.

The vintage images are reworked to gently disrupt them. To scratch at the glossy surface and see what’s underneath. This project is my way of questioning how femininity gets shaped, performed, and quietly contained…even when it sparkles.
